This page is dedicated to disspell some of the common myths and misconceptions about people with Down Syndrome.

MYTH:  People with Down Syndrome have big tongues and that's why the tongue often protrudes outside of the mouth.
TRUTH:  The tongue is one of the few organs that is normal in people with Down Syndrome but, the mouth is not.  The mouth of people with Down Syndrome is under-developed which causes the appearance of and over-sized tounge when in actuality it's the mouth that's smaller.
 
 
MYTH:  People with Down Syndrome are retarded.
TRUTH:  Many people with Down Syndrome are definitely educatable and are often in regular classroom settings.  Like me!
 
 
MYTH:  Children with Down Syndrome are born to older parents.
TRUTH:  Eighty percent of children with Down Syndrome are born to mothers under the age of 35.
 
 
MYTH:  People with Down Syndrome always appear to be happy.
TRUTH:  People with Down Syndrome have the same emotions as everyone else in the population.
 
 
MYTH:  Down Syndrome is inherited from one or both parents.
TRUTH:  Down Syndrome is an error in cell division and is not caused by either parent.
